FAQs - Psychology for men in Torquay and surf coast

What should I expect in our first session?

The first session is a low-pressure opportunity for us to get to know each other. We’ll discuss what’s currently weighing on you, your goals for therapy, and look at your history to understand the bigger picture. It’s a grounded space where you lead the pace.

Do you offer both face-to-face and telehealth sessions?

We currently offer face-to-face sessions at our clinic in Torquay on Thursdays only. Please see the booking page for available times. Otherwise, we offer telehealth sessions throughout the week during business and after hours to suit your needs.

What are the fees and are Medicare rebates available?

Our session fees are: ·       $220 with a general psychologist. Medicare rebate is $101.55. If you're claiming via Private Health Insurance, your psychologist will send you an email with your receipt attached for claiming.

How do online vs. in-person sessions work?

We offer both in-person clinic visits and secure, telehealth video sessions. Telehealth is simply where you can access mental health support remotely without the need for a face-to-face appointment. You’ll be taking part in online video sessions through your own computer or smartphone. Many dads find online therapy more convenient around family and work schedules. Both formats offer the same standard of professional clinical care and individual attention.

What do I need for telehealth?

Any smart device with a camera and a stable internet connection can be used for telehealth. This can include computers, laptops, tablets or smart phones.

Are telehealth sessions covered by Medicare?

Medicare rebates are available for telehealth sessions. You will need to get a mental health care plan (MHCP) & referral from your GP or a Psychiatrist. you can qualify for Medicare rebates of up to $101.55 for 10 sessions per calendar year.

What other referrals are accepted?

Clients can be seen under TAC, Work Cover, Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA), and EAP referrals. Also, if you have private health insurance, you might be eligible for additional rebates. It's best to check with your fund about your specific entitlements. Private clients are also welcome.

How do I get a Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP)?

You’ll need to book an appointment with a GP so that they can organise a MHCP for you. Your GP may ask for a few details of you, including:·

The name of your psychologist:-       Mathew Gaynor ·

The name of your psychologist’s practice:-       Surf Coast Mens Psychology ·

Address of the practice (even though the sessions are online):-       Lunar Street, Mount Duneed VIC, 3217-

How long does therapy usually last?

There is no set duration; it depends on your unique needs. Some men find focus in 6-10 sessions for specific challenges, while others prefer ongoing maintenance to support their role as fathers and partners. We’ll regularly review our progress together.

Are only men able to be seen?

While male and father issues are the specialty of this business, I am experienced in providing therapy to different genders across all age groups and am able to provide these services here.
